God or gods?
Which do you serve in your life? Reflect on whether you are allowing God to be head of your life, or other little gods.
"You shall have no other gods before me." — Exodus 20:3
Reflection
"Little gods" don't always look like statues. They can be approval, performance, control, success, or even survival patterns we learned in trauma. When we've been hurt, it's natural to cling to whatever makes us feel safe — even if it quietly takes God's place in our hearts.
God's call to put Him first is not harsh; it's protective. He knows that anything we elevate above Him will eventually exhaust us. He invites us to lay down the false gods of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and self-reliance, and to rest in His leadership instead.
Crown Insight
Letting God be God is not losing control — it's finally resting in the One who truly holds you.
Gentle Encouragement
You don't have to shame yourself for the "little gods" you've leaned on. Simply notice them with God and invite Him into those places.
Journaling Prompts
- What do you tend to run to when you feel unsafe or overwhelmed?
- How might those things be functioning as "little gods" in your life?
- What would it look like to invite God into that space instead?
Closing Prayer
Lord, show me where I've placed other things above You — even good things. Reveal the "little gods" I've trusted more than Your heart. Help me surrender control and trust Your leadership in my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
